Another unconventional project. I am part of a group of people that camps together at regional events that follow the ten principles of Burning Man. The event close to Austin is called Burning Flipside, and my camp is called the Wonderlounge.
This project was to design and lead the build of a large circus-style tent. replacing an older tent. We had some design goals that included being durable and reusable, providing a way to let hot air out but still stay dry, and modularity so that the pieces wouldn't be too heavy. This also allows us to set up the tent as a single pole 35 foot diameter circle or as a 35 foot by 55 foot double pole oval.
The tent got a harsh trial during its first outing. The event we brought it to was Memorial Day weekend 2015, and central Texas got record amounts of rainfall. People attending Burning Flipside that year will often refer to it as Floodside. I was quite proud that the tent stayed up and dry the whole weekend.
